Union Home Minister Amit Shah strongly criticised the opposition in the Lok Sabha during the discussion on the resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla. He said that Parliament is not a marketplace and members are expected to speak according to the rules of the House.
The debate took place during the ongoing Parliamentary Budget Session after Congress MP Mohammad Jawed moved a resolution seeking the removal of the Lok Sabha Speaker. The resolution received support from more than 50 Members of Parliament, after which BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, who was presiding over the proceedings, granted permission to move the motion.
While allowing the motion to be taken up, Jagdambika Pal informed the House that a total of 10 hours had been allotted for the debate. He also asked all members to restrict their speeches to the subject of the resolution. Pal further said that the Speaker had been generous in granting permissions and procedures for the opposition to move their resolution.
During the debate, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also criticised the opposition and referred to remarks made earlier by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. Rijiju said that parliamentary rules clearly require members to obtain permission from the Speaker before speaking in the House.
He said, “When you look at the Constitution and the rules of the House, no one has challenged any decision of the Speaker. That day I was upset for the fact that the Opposition MP said that ‘I do not need permission from anyone to speak in Parliament’. This is on record. ‘This is my right to speak in Parliament’, our Leader of Opposition said this.”
Rijiju further said that senior members of the Congress party should have explained the parliamentary procedures to their leader. He added, “So I was thinking, there are many senior members in Congress, why did they not explain that in this House, PM, minister, LoP can be present but one needs permission from speaker to speak.”
During the discussion, Rijiju also remarked that the Congress party could have chosen Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as its leader in the House.
Responding to the comments, Priyanka Gandhi defended Rahul Gandhi and said that he has consistently raised issues related to the public. She said, “There is only one person in the country who has not bowed down before them in the last 12 years. It is the Leader of the Opposition. They cannot digest the truth he speaks.”
Later, speaking in the House, Amit Shah strongly criticised the conduct of the opposition members. He said that Parliament functions according to rules and traditions, and members must follow those rules while speaking.
Shah said, “This House is not a marketplace. Members are expected to speak according to rules.”
He also stressed that parliamentary procedures must be respected and that debates should be conducted in a disciplined manner. According to him, the dignity and functioning of Parliament depend on members following the established rules and traditions.
The discussion on the resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla led to sharp exchanges between the ruling party and opposition members in the Lok Sabha. The debate was part of the ongoing proceedings of the Parliamentary Budget Session, where members from both sides of the House presented their views on the motion.
The resolution against the Speaker was introduced by Congress MP Mohammad Jawed and received the support of more than 50 MPs, which allowed it to be formally taken up for discussion in the House. BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, who was in the Chair at the time, granted permission to move the motion and allocated time for debate.
The Lok Sabha continued discussions on the matter, with leaders from both the government and the opposition participating in the debate. The debate eventually saw heated exchanges between the two sides, with the government defending the Speaker and the opposition strongly pressing its motion.
The Lok Sabha later rejected the opposition’s no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla by a voice vote amid sloganeering. The House was subsequently adjourned for the day. The debate saw heated arguments between the government and the opposition, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah strongly defending the Speaker and accusing the opposition of destroying parliamentary traditions.
