On Tuesday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids at several locations throughout Tamil Nadu as part of an investigation into an anti-election conspiracy linked to the Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT). This organisation is known for advocating the establishment of Islamic rule in India. Officials involved in the operation reported that these actions are part of a broader inquiry into alleged divisive conspiracies associated with the group’s activities.
Officials reported that the homes of 11 suspects in Chennai, Tambaram, and Kanyakumari districts were searched during the raids. Authorities recovered various incriminating materials, including digital devices, unaccounted cash, and literature associated with Hizb ut-Tahrir.
The Investigation focuses on the use of various social media platforms to incite disaffection and campaign against electoral participation, which Hizb ut-Tahrir considers un-Islamic. The agency alleges that HuT is actively encouraging its followers to undermine and overthrow the democratically established government through divisive activities.
The agency further said that Hameed Hussain, a key conspirator in the case, “had collaborated with five other accused persons to hold secret meetings for promoting the anti-India ideology of Hizb ut-Tahrir”.
“The investigations so far have revealed that the accused, along with several groups of people, had carried out campaigns throughout Tamil Nadu to establish Khilafah or Islamic rule in India, and had been involved in activities aimed at dividing the people and disrupting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country,” the agency said in a statement.
The federal agency assumed control of the investigation from the Chennai police in July.
