The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has launched extensive searches at multiple locations in Punjab as part of its ongoing investigation into last year’s attack on the Indian High Commission in Canada. The raids are being carried out across 14 locations in the state on Friday, September 13, 2024.
This operation marks a significant step in the NIA’s anti-terrorism probe, which was initiated after a case was registered in June of the previous year. The probe is focused on an incident that occurred on March 23, 2023, when pro-Khalistani supporters staged a protest outside the Indian High Commission in Ottawa, Canada. According to the NIA’s First Information Report (FIR), the protesters were involved in raising anti-India slogans, attaching Khalistani flags to the boundary wall of the High Commission, and throwing two grenades inside the High Commission building.
The NIA’s search operation aims to gather evidence and identify individuals linked to the pro-Khalistani group involved in the attack. These searches are crucial in understanding the network and operations of those responsible for the violent protest, which posed a significant security threat to Indian diplomatic missions abroad.
This series of raids is part of the NIA’s broader effort to combat terrorism and address the challenges posed by extremist groups targeting Indian interests. The agency's commitment to tackling terrorism is reflected in its rigorous approach to investigating and prosecuting those responsible for such attacks.
The operation in Punjab highlights the ongoing security concerns related to the attack on the Indian High Commission in Canada and underscores the NIA’s determination to ensure justice. By intensifying its efforts to uncover the facts and apprehend suspects, the NIA aims to reinforce its mandate to protect Indian diplomatic facilities and counteract terrorism on an international scale.
