The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against 11 accused persons for their alleged involvement in a terror conspiracy linked to an offshoot of the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) terrorist organisation. The agency submitted the chargesheet before the NIA Special Court in Guwahati, Assam, on Thursday. It charged the accused under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The NIA said its investigation found that the accused played an active role in the activities of Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK), which it described as a manifestation of the banned JMB. The agency stated that IMK worked to spread the terrorist outfit's ideology across West Bengal and several north-eastern states, including Assam and Tripura.

According to the investigation, the conspiracy focused on promoting the extremist agenda of the terrorist organisation. The accused allegedly tried to radicalise vulnerable youth and expand the group's network in different parts of India. The NIA said its activities strengthened the presence and influence of its outfit within the country.

The investigation also revealed that senior JMB member Imam Mahmud Habibullah established IMK to further the banned organisation's activities in India. The agency stated that IMK functioned as an extension of JMB and worked to spread its ideology among targeted groups.

The NIA found that the 11 accused allegedly worked together to increase IMK's presence in India through several organised activities. The agency said they held secret meetings, conducted religious indoctrination programmes, distributed extremist literature and used digital platforms to spread anti-India propaganda. "They were promoting allegiance to the leadership of IMK/JMB."

The chargesheet identifies Nasimuddin and Jagir Mia as two of the main accused in the case. According to the NIA, Nasimuddin led IMK's activities in Assam, while Jagir Mia headed the outfit's operations in Tripura. The agency alleged that both played key roles in expanding the organisation's network in their respective states.

During the investigation, the NIA recovered several incriminating documents, electronic devices and digital records. The agency said these materials helped investigators build the case against the accused. Officials examined the seized evidence to trace the group's activities and establish the alleged conspiracy.

The NIA confirmed that its investigation into the case is still underway. The agency continues to examine the available evidence and investigate other aspects related to the alleged terror network. The latest chargesheet marks another step in the agency's efforts to crack down on organisations accused of promoting extremist ideology and expanding terrorist activities in different parts of the country.
