The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has submitted a charge sheet against two individuals in connection with a terror conspiracy involving the Hizb Ut-Tahrir (HuT) terrorist organisation.
The charge sheet, filed in the NIA Special Court in Poonamallee, Chennai, names Abdul Rehman (also known as Abdul Rahman) and Mujibur Rehman (also known as Mujibur Rahman Altham Sahib). They have been charged under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The charges involve planning and preparing to carry out terrorist activities to support the HuT ideology in Tamil Nadu and other locations.
According to NIA investigations, the accused had colluded with self-proclaimed HuT office bearers to spread the group's ideology, which aspired to establish an Islamic Caliphate in India and enforce the Sharia-based draft constitution drafted by Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani, the founder of the HuT. According to the NIA investigation, the accused were actively involved in recruiting students, known as Daris, to attend secret classes organized by HuT. They also held Bayan (religious teaching) sessions and created several short films to promote the organisation's anti-India ideology on social media platforms.
They also organised an exhibition to display the military strength of Islamic nations, with the aim of inviting them (Nussrah) to overthrow India's legally established government through violent jihad and warfare. The matter is being investigated further. In May of this year, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the Greater Chennai Police first filed the case, which was then turned over to the NIA.
