The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has achieved a remarkable milestone in 2024, with a 100% conviction rate. A total of 68 individuals were convicted in 25 cases, highlighting the agency's commitment to justice and strengthening national security.
According to NIA officials, the agency arrested 210 people involved in various kinds of illegal activities from 80 cases it handled in 2024. The two main categories were North East insurgency (18 incidents) and Left Wing Extremism (LWE) (28 cases). Five cases of human trafficking, six cases of explosive substances, and seven cases of Jammu and Kashmir Jihadi were also registered. Throughout the year, the agency focused on breaking down networks of terrorists, gangsters and insurgents. The NIA carried out successful operations, resulting in the arrest of 14 people connected to Khalistani terrorism, 13 linked to gang activities and 11 ISIS members.
A key achievement was the arrest of five individuals associated with the ULFA(I) terrorist group in Assam. This came after the group called for an Independence Day boycott, which caused fear as IEDs were planted throughout the state. The agency made significant progress in seizing weapons across several states. In one major operation in Jammu, they arrested overground workers of the Hizbul Mujahideen and recovered a large amount of arms. In another case, the NIA seized rifles, pistols, ammunition and explosives that were meant for insurgent groups in the Northeast. The NIA's investigative scope went beyond arrests and convictions to include foreign extraditions, which resulted in the return of important suspects like Salman Khan from Rwanda and Tarsem Singh Sandhu from the United Arab Emirates.
These measures demonstrate the NIA's increasing capacity to combat organised crime and transnational terrorism. To enhance its operations, the NIA set up two new exclusive courts in Jammu and Ranchi. The agency also worked on strengthening state police forces by giving specialised training to more than 1,600 officers. The NIA's performance in 2024 shows how well it is fighting terrorism and organised crime, while also proving that it is a key agency in India's national security system.
