Incidents of attempts to derail trains by placing objects on tracks are increasing in various parts of the country. Investigations by the NIA and Uttar Pradesh ATS have revealed that training on methods to derail trains was being conducted in some madrasas. The probe uncovered a conspiracy to derail trains in Jhansi and Kanpur.
The investigation revealed that Madarsa students are being radicalised and encouraged to derail trains. Additionally, the young people are receiving training on how to derail trains. The agencies are raiding different Madarsas in the area as part of the investigation. The probe teams recovered several videos that were part of the online training. The videos show radical Islamists encouraging young people to derail trains and giving them instructions on how to accomplish it. Mufti Khalid Nadvi, a Madarsa teacher, is being questioned concerning the plot.
On Thursday, investigation teams searched Nadvi's house and questioned him for several hours. While the NIA and ATS teams were taking him to the police station for further questioning, a large Muslim mob attacked the convoy and freed him. The mob, which included many women, gathered after announcements were made from the local mosque. Later, the police detained Nadvi again for questioning. His laptop, mobile phone, and other items have been seized. He is accused of being involved in terrorist activities and receiving foreign funding. After questioning, the police released Mufti Khalid Nadvi.
The police have registered a case against over 100 people for attacking the NIA-ATS team and helping a detainee escape. Raids are underway to catch the accused. In the past three months, multiple attempts have been made to disrupt major trains like the Sabarmati Express and Kalindi Express near Jhansi and Kanpur. Incidents of stone-pelting on the ‘Vande Bharat’ train were also reported in the area. Items such as cylinders and wooden logs were placed on the tracks but were noticed in time by vigilant railway workers and locals, preventing any accidents
