On Sunday, National Investigation Agency (NIA) sleuths arrested two sympathisers of Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a fundamentalist organisation banned in several countries, from Thanjavur following day-long searches conducted in 10 locations across five districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai.
The two men who have been detained are Abdul Rehman, also known as Abdul Rahman, and Mujibur Rehman, also known as Mujibur Rahman Altham Sahib. They are both from Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district.
According to a statement released by the NIA, Hizb-ut-Tahrir is dedicated to restoring the Islamic caliphate and implementing the constitution drafted by its founder, Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani.
"NIA investigations revealed that they were involved in conducting secret classes to radicalise youth into extremist ideologies, propagating anti-democratic sentiments against the Indian Constitution, law, and judiciary," the statement said.
"Today's searches led to the seizure of digital devices (mobile phones, laptops, SIM cards and memory cards) and several incriminating documents, including books and printouts containing the ideology of Hizb-ut-Tahrir, Khilafah, Islamic State and proposed Khilafah government and its funding structures etc.," it added.
The NIA statement revealed that the organisation brainwashed the trainees by convincing them that India is currently "Dar-ul-kufr," meaning the country of unbelievers, and that it is their religious duty to transform it into "Dar-ul-Islam" by establishing an Islamic State through jihad.
During the searches, the NIA confiscated mobile phones, laptops, SIM cards, memory cards, and other digital devices. They also discovered books and printouts containing the ideologies of Hizb-ut-Tahrir, the concept of Khilafah (caliphate), the structures of the Islamic State, and information about its funders.
