The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made a significant arrest in the high-profile 2010 Kerala professor palm chopping case. The arrest involves an individual accused of harbouring the prime assailant responsible for the brutal attack on T.J. Joseph, a professor at Newman College in Thodupuzha, Kerala. This development is a key moment in the ongoing investigation, which has been active for over a decade.
The suspect apprehended by the NIA is alleged to have provided shelter and support to the primary attacker, helping him evade capture. This arrest is expected to shed more light on the broader network involved in the crime and the support system that aided the attackers. The palm chopping incident, which occurred in July 2010, involved a group of men severing Professor Joseph's right palm in response to a question paper he had prepared. The paper was deemed offensive to Prophet Muhammad by some, sparking outrage among extremist factions.
The attackers were reportedly motivated by radical ideologies, including the goal of establishing an Islamic state by the year 2047. This ideology played a role in the planning and execution of the attack, which sought to punish Joseph for what the attackers perceived as blasphemy. The case drew nationwide attention and condemnation, highlighting serious issues related to freedom of speech and the safety of educators.
The NIA's investigation, which has led to the arrest of 19 individuals to date, is focused on uncovering the full extent of the conspiracy. Those arrested include not only the direct perpetrators of the attack but also individuals who provided logistical support and harbouring services. The agency's recent actions underscore its commitment to tackling extremist violence and ensuring justice for the victims.
The NIA has emphasized that it aims to gather comprehensive information about the network behind the attack and to prevent similar incidents in the future. This ongoing investigation is crucial for maintaining public safety and upholding the rule of law.
