In a major development pertaining to the investigation into the attack on the High Commission of India in London last year, followed by subsequent protests, the NIA has apprehended a key suspect.
Identified as Inderpal Singh Gaba, a resident of Hounslow in the United Kingdom, he has been arrested for his involvement in unlawful activities during the protests on March 22, 2023.
According to the anti-terror agency, the attacks on the high commission were deemed retaliatory actions following the Punjab Police's intervention against pro-Khalistani separatist Amritpal Singh on March 18 of that year.
A statement from the NIA has revealed that their investigations into the case have unveiled that the events in London on March 19th and March 22nd last year were components of a broader conspiracy to carry out severe assaults on Indian missions and their officials.
Khalistan sympathisers staged a protest at the Indian High Commission in London, protesting the crackdown on Amritpal Singh. During the protest, they removed the Indian flag from the building's first-floor balcony, prompting the Indian mission to replace it with an even larger flag.
The Indian community in the UK organised a substantial gathering in front of the Indian High Commission to protest the desecration of the Indian flag. They demanded that the Mayor of London and the British government take action against those responsible for the incident.
The Ministry of External Affairs summoned the UK's senior-most diplomat in Delhi and demanded an explanation for the "absence of security" at the high commission. In a statement, it expressed dissatisfaction with the UK government's "indifference" towards Indian diplomats and personnel, deeming it "unacceptable".
