The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of recent media reports concerning two separate incidents of food poisoning in Andhra Pradesh, one of which resulted in the tragic deaths of three children. The NHRC has sought a detailed report from the state authorities on these incidents, highlighting serious concerns about food safety and public health.
In the first incident reported from Anakapalli district, three children staying at an orphanage lost their lives after consuming contaminated food. Additionally, 37 other children fell ill and were admitted to various hospitals in Anakapalli and Visakhapatnam. The seriousness of the situation has prompted a significant response from health officials, who are currently monitoring the condition of those affected. This incident was highlighted in a report by The New Indian Express.
The second incident involved the alleged food poisoning of 70 students at a private institution in Chittoor. Many of these students experienced severe symptoms, leading to concerns about the quality and safety of food being provided in educational institutions.
The NHRC noted that if the contents of these reports are accurate, they raise serious issues of human rights violations. "Both incidents indicate negligence of the concerned authorities towards ensuring proper food quality and the health of the inmates," the commission stated. The NHRC emphasized that these incidents reflect a lack of oversight and accountability in maintaining food safety standards, especially in institutions responsible for the care of children and students.
In response, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Andhra Pradesh, calling for a detailed report within two weeks. The report is expected to include the status of FIRs, the health status of the victims, and the steps taken or proposed to prevent such incidents from recurring. The NHRC stressed the importance of taking immediate corrective measures to safeguard public health and prevent future tragedies.
