A new $1 coin featuring US President Donald Trump’s face on one side will go on sale Wednesday, as the United States prepares to mark its 250th anniversary. The coin, designed to celebrate the country’s history, will have a living president’s image on US currency. The U.S. Mint will issue the gold-finish coin, which can be used as legal tender.
The coin has Trump’s portrait on the “heads” side and the Great Seal of the United States on the “tails” side. The design received approval earlier this year from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. Trump appointed the members of the commission. The president had earlier described the idea of putting his face on a coin as “very unusual” while also saying that he was “honoured by it.”
The release comes during Trump’s second term, which has seen several efforts to attach his name or image to prominent American institutions and landmarks. Some of these moves have faced legal challenges. Among them are efforts to place Trump’s name on the Kennedy Centre and the U.S. Institute of Peace. The latest coin adds to a series of attempts made by the president to leave his mark on Washington and American history.
The coin has also sparked criticism over federal rules regarding the use of a living president’s image on US currency. Federal law generally prohibits placing the image of a living president on US currency. However, the Treasury Secretary has certain powers to approve the minting and release of special coins under specific circumstances.
The U.S. Mint said the coins were produced to “honour 250 years of great American heritage.” The front of the coin features Trump’s face, with the word “LIBERTY” written in an arc above his portrait. The years “1776 2026” appear below his image, marking the period from the Declaration of Independence to the United States' 250th anniversary.
The reverse side carries the Great Seal of the United States. It shows a bald eagle holding arrows in one claw and an olive branch in the other. A banner held in the eagle’s beak carries the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM," which is Latin for "out of many, one.” The design follows the traditional imagery associated with the Great Seal while giving the coin a distinct anniversary theme.
The U.S. Mint will sell the coins in different quantities. A roll containing 25 coins will cost $61, while a bag containing 100 coins will be priced at $154.50. The Mint has also added a special element to some of the rolls and bags. A limited number of special-issue coins have been randomly placed among them.
These special coins will carry the marking “July 4th.” They were struck on July 4, the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The special markings make the coins distinct from the regular anniversary pieces and add an element of surprise for buyers.
The U.S. Mint has placed a temporary limit on purchases. Each household can currently place up to two orders. The Mint said this restriction will end at 2 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday. After that, buyers will no longer face the two-order limit.
The coin’s release, part of the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations, is quite a hit for its unusual design. Trump’s appearance on the coin has made it a subject of political and legal debate. At the same time, the coin remains an official piece of US currency and reflects the country’s preparations for the major anniversary in 2026.
