During his address to the UN General Assembly on Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented two maps, characterising India as a “Blessing” and Iran as a “Curse.” This imagery comes amid escalating tensions with Iran, highlighting the contrasting relationships Israel has with these two nations, as reported by the news agency ANI.
The map labelled “Blessing,” displayed by Netanyahu illustrated a vision of unity between Israel and its Arab partners. It depicted a land bridge connecting the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, facilitating enhanced connectivity between Asia and Europe.
The map designated as “Curse” by Netanyahu was described as depicting “an arc of terror that Iran has created and imposed from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean.” Additionally, the maps identified the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, Gaza, and Syria’s Golan Heights as part of Israel.
The maps were part of a broader appeal by Netanyahu, urging countries to impose sanctions on Iran and collaborate with Israel in efforts to halt its nuclear weapons program.
During his speech, Netanyahu said, “For too long the world has appeased Iran, it turns a blind eye to its internal repression, it turns a blind eye to external aggression. That appeasement must end and that appeasement must end now.”
Talking about Iran’s support for Hezbollah and the Israeli strikes targeting the group in Lebanon, Netanyahu delivered a chilling message, “I have a message for the tyrants of Tehran. If you strike us, we will strike you. There is no place in Iran where the long arm of Israel cannot reach. And that is true for the entire Middle East.”
Tensions between the two countries began to rise after the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July. The situation has further escalated, with Iran condemning Israeli strikes in Lebanon as a “flagrant war crime.”
