The counselling for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate), or NEET UG, scheduled for Saturday has been postponed until further notice. The new date is yet to be announced.
Sources have informed that exam authorities are awaiting a court hearing, scheduled for July 8, before proceeding. This decision comes amid allegations of irregularities, including a paper leak, in the NEET exam.
Following the announcement, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised the BJP, stating that the future of numerous students is at risk. In a post on X, he remarked, "The whole NEET-UG issue is getting worse by the day. The non-biological PM and his biological Education Minister are adding further proof to their demonstrated incompetence and insensitivity. The future of lakhs of our youth is simply unsafe in their hands."
On July 5, amidst increasing demands for the cancellation of the controversial NEET-UG 2024 exam over alleged malpractices, the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) informed the Supreme Court that scrapping the exam would be "counterproductive" and would "seriously jeopardise" the futures of many honest candidates, given the lack of evidence for a large-scale breach of confidentiality.
The NTA, accountable for conducting the NEET exam for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and related courses, along with the Union Education Ministry, have been the focus of media scrutiny and student protests. Allegations range from question paper leaks to impersonation during the test held on Friday, May 5.
In separate affidavits opposing pleas for the exam's cancellation, a re-test, and a court-monitored investigation into the allegations, the Union Education Ministry and the NTA highlighted that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the cases registered in various states.
