In a major political shift within the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which includes the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Jana Sena Party (JSP), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has successfully passed a no-confidence motion against Mayor G. Hari Venkata Kumari of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). The meeting to decide the motion was held on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at the corporation office and was overseen by the district Collector and acting GVMC Commissioner M.N. Harendhira Prasad. Following the vote, Anakapalli MP C.M. Ramesh announced that 74 corporators and ex-officio members voted against the Mayor, resulting in a unanimous win for the NDA.
The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), which held the mayoral position through Golagani Hari Venkata Kumari, chose to boycott the council meeting entirely. The no-confidence motion was introduced after four years of her leadership, driven by growing dissatisfaction among corporators who accused her of corruption during her term.
Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao called the outcome the end of what he described as YSRCP’s "undemocratic" rule in GVMC, and said the NDA would soon choose a new Mayor.
MLAs, MPs, other political leaders, and a large number of supporters gathered at the GVMC office to celebrate the NDA's victory. Supporters chanted slogans like ‘Jai NDA’, ‘Jai Chandrababu’, and ‘Jai Pawan Kalyan’, while firecrackers were burst to mark the occasion.
Having strategically planned this move, the NDA alliance has now taken control of the mayor's office. With the no-confidence motion successfully passed, the alliance is set to elect a new mayor for Visakhapatnam on Sunday. After the vote, NDA leaders and corporators celebrated their victory in high spirits.
TDP corporators arrived in Visakhapatnam late Friday night, April 18, 2025, and were taken to a hotel near Jagadamba Junction, where party MLAs welcomed them. On Saturday morning, all the MLAs, MPs, and corporators travelled together to the GVMC office in a special private bus to attend the no-confidence meeting.
