Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Tuesday after the NDA’s massive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara and was witnessed by the presence of several top leaders from the BJP-led alliance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President Nitin Nabin, senior Union ministers, along with chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from several NDA-ruled states, attended the ceremony. Their presence reflected the importance of Assam in the BJP’s larger political strategy and highlighted the alliance’s confidence after the election results.
This will be the third NDA government in Assam. The alliance once again secured a strong mandate and managed to further strengthen its political position in the state. Along with Himanta Biswa Sarma, four ministers also took the oath. The ministers included two from the BJP and one each from its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People's Front.
The leaders who were sworn in as ministers are Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora from AGP, Charan Boro from BPF and Ajanta Neog. Former minister and senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass has been chosen as the NDA’s candidate for the post of Speaker of the Assam Assembly.
The NDA’s performance in the Assam Assembly elections was one of its strongest in recent years. The alliance secured a three-fourths majority by winning 81 seats in the 126-member Assembly. The BJP-led alliance, which included AGP and BPF, collectively won 101 seats, further underlining its political dominance in the state.
Both AGP and BPF played a key role in the alliance’s success and secured ten seats each. The results reflected the NDA’s ability to maintain support across different regions of Assam. The victory also strengthened the BJP’s image as the central political force in the state.
The election outcome was marked by two very different political stories. On one side was the strong rise of Himanta Biswa Sarma as a dominant political leader. On the other was the decline of a political dynasty that once had a major influence in Assam politics. The results showed a clear shift in the state’s political direction.
Himanta Biswa Sarma registered a huge victory in his constituency and won by a margin of more than 80,000 votes. His constituency turned into one of the strongest BJP bastions in the state. In his victory speech, he credited the "double-engine" growth fuelled by PM Narendra Modi's support over the last decade.
The 2026 Assam Assembly election is likely to be remembered as a turning point in the state’s political journey. The results showed that voters moved away from regional and sectarian divisions and instead chose a direct political contest between the BJP’s model of “transformation” and the Congress party’s ideological opposition.
The NDA’s sweeping victory and the beginning of Himanta Biswa Sarma’s second term have once again confirmed the alliance’s strong hold over Assam politics. The election results also indicate that the BJP continues to expand its influence in the Northeast with a combination of strong leadership, alliance support and organisational strength.
