In a significant political shift, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), led by Omar Abdullah, secured a majority in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Thursday. This development followed the decision of four independent MLAs to join the party, boosting the NC's strength to 46—exactly meeting the majority threshold. It is important to note that this count does not include the five MLAs who will be nominated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
Pyare Lal Sharma, Satish Sharma, Choudhary Mohammed Akram, and Dr. Rameshwar Singh, who were elected from the Inderwal, Chhamb, Surankote, and Bani constituencies, have all pledged their support to the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference. With this newfound backing, the NC is no longer reliant on Congress for governance. This development intensifies Congress's ongoing challenges, which stem from a series of leadership disputes and election setbacks, the latest being their performance in Haryana.
The counting of votes concluded on Tuesday, with the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference securing 42 seats, while Congress managed to win six. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which performed strongly in the Jammu region as anticipated, received 29 seats. However, their total has now risen to 32 following support from three independent candidates. Meanwhile, the People's Democratic Party, led by former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, faced a significant decline, retaining only three seats from its previous tally of 28 in 2014, effectively precluding any chance of playing a 'kingmaker' role.
