Following reports indicating a substantial presence of Myanmar refugees in the Maring areas of Tengnoupal district bordering Myanmar in Manipur, the Rilram Area Maring Organisation (RAMO) conducted an inspection. They inspected villages near Border Pillars 82 to 89 and discovered a significant number of illegal Myanmarese migrant settlers.
RAMO stated that they visited Chanringphai, Choktong, N Satang, and Sangtong villages within the Lamlong Khunou circle. The visit came after village chiefs in the area informed RAMO that they were unable to manage the influx of refugees.
During their visit, the RAMO team observed illegal immigrants from Myanmar settling in areas encompassed by Border Pillars 82 to 89.
They noted that despite the recent suspension of the Free Movement Regime (FMR), these refugees were observed moving back and forth across the Indo-Myanmar border with ease during late night hours.
RAMO observed that illegal cross-border movements are taking place under the surveillance of the Assam Rifles, whose outpost is located near the compromised border. It appears that the State Government is unaware of this ongoing illegal migration.
Since violence erupted on May 3 last year between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities, at least 220 people have lost their lives, 1,500 have been injured, and 60,000 have been displaced.
The riots were sparked by a 'Tribal Solidarity March' held in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's request for Scheduled Tribe status.
The ongoing conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities has resulted in a significant toll on lives, injuries, and displacement since its outbreak in May last year. The 'Tribal Solidarity March' underscored deep-seated tensions over ethnic identity and political status in the region.
Efforts to mitigate the violence and address the underlying grievances remain crucial as the affected communities seek reconciliation and long-term stability amid challenging circumstances.
