The operational launch of the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) has made India take a huge leap towards the expansion of cruise tourism and maritime infrastructure. It has become the largest cruise terminal in the country. After the inauguration by Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways the terminal became operational from April 21, 2025,
The MICT, built at Mumbai in Maharashtra, has been set to act as one of the major nodes in the cruise tourism map of India. It has an annual capacity for 1 million passengers or around 10,000 passengers a day. The terminal is also meant to accommodate five ships at one time for passenger operations. It boasts a draft depth of 11 meters to understand running vessels up to 300 meters in length.
Built with an investment of Rs 556 crores in total, the MICT shows a very strong push for modernisation of India’s port infrastructure. It is a useful addition to the global cruise economy of India.
Ministry of Shipping signed major investment contracts of Rs 5,700 crores for infrastructure development in Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra. These investments cater to developing facilities for container, bulk, and liquid cargoes.
Some important developments planned as part of this initiative are a Rs 4,200 crore terminal for container, bulk and liquid cargo types, and also a dedicated Rs 1,000 crore terminal solely for bulk and liquid cargo.
These steps perfectly align with the Government of India under the Sagarmala Programme, which lays stress on port-led development and improvement of maritime logistics. The two projects, MICT and Vadhavan Port, are all set to boost the industrial supply chains, augment the trade-connectivity footfall.
