The grandson of legendary singer MS Subbulakshmi has filed a petition in the Madras High Court against the decision to award the Sangita Kalanidhi MS Subbulakshmi Award to Carnatic singer TM Krishna. This award is given annually by The Hindu group in honour of MS Subbulakshmi's musical legacy.
TM Krishna received the award this year for his long-standing excellence in music. However, V Shrinivasan, Subbulakshmi's grandson, claims that Krishna has made disrespectful and harmful comments about his grandmother on social media. Shrinivasan argues that Krishna has belittled Subbulakshmi's achievements and has suggested that she was recognised for supporting "Brahmanism," a term he uses to criticise her legacy.
In his plea, Shrinivasan questions how the Music Academy could honour someone who has criticised a revered figure like his grandmother, who worked tirelessly for the Academy. He believes that giving the award to Krishna is inappropriate, comparing it to awarding a prize meant for a devotee to someone who does not share the same beliefs.
Shrinivasan also mentioned that MS Subbulakshmi had made a will in 1997, stating that no trust or foundation should be created in her name or any funds collected for such purposes. He argues that granting this award goes against her wishes.
In response, the Music Academy stated that awarding Krishna does not disrespect MS Subbulakshmi's memory or contributions to music. They argued that Shrinivasan had no right to challenge the award just because he disagreed with it. The Academy asserted that their decision to present the award does not violate any of Subbulakshmi’s wishes, as they have not created a trust or collected any funds.
The Academy further noted that the decision to confer awards is entirely within their rights, and Shrinivasan would need to show a clear violation of legal or moral grounds to challenge it. They have requested that the court dismiss Shrinivasan's petition.
