Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, informed Parliament on Friday that several Hindu temples in the United States have been vandalised with anti-India graffiti in recent years. Kirti Vardhan Singh confirmed in a written response to the Lok Sabha that incidents of Hindu temples in the US being defaced have indeed occurred. He also assured that the Indian government has taken up these matters with the US government through diplomatic channels.
He stated whenever there's an attack or vandalism on a Hindu temple or place of worship in the US, the Indian government immediately addresses the issue with the US government through diplomatic channels.
“The respective temple management authorities and the community associations have also registered complaints with the local law enforcement authorities and have called for proper investigations, as well as stringent action against those responsible for these acts and for providing the places of worship with adequate safety and security arrangements," Singh said as in response.
Singh further stated that US law enforcement agencies have categorised these incidents as hate crimes and are actively investigating them. He also mentioned that members of the US Congress have called on relevant authorities to develop a comprehensive strategy to address hate crimes against Hindus in the country. The vandalism of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in California has once again raised concerns and caused outrage within the Hindu community. In response, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly condemned the incident, urging authorities to take swift action against those responsible and to strengthen security measures for areas of worship.
“We condemn such despicable acts in the strongest terms. We call upon the local law enforcement authorities to take stringent action against those responsible for these acts and ensure adequate security for places of worship", stated spokesperson of MEA Randhir Jaiswal.
Last year, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Sacramento was vandalised on September 25, shortly after a similar attack on the BAPS temple in New York. The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), a Hindu advocacy group, voiced concern over the increasing cases of vandalism and hate crimes against the Hindu community.
