Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told US President Donald Trump that India would never accept third-party intervention with Pakistan on the issue of Kashmir, India’s top diplomat stated.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that Modi strongly conveyed India’s long-held position to Trump in a phone call between the two leaders on Tuesday.
Trump had repeatedly claimed to mediate between India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue since a four-day conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbours in May. The White House did not comment on India’s statement.
Misri added that Modi told Trump clearly that during the duration of the conflict, India and the US did not hold any talks on a trade agreement or on mediation between India and Pakistan by the US.
Trump had claimed that India and Pakistan ended the conflict following a US-brokered ceasefire. He also claimed he used trade as leverage to make it happen. Pakistan backed the US claims, but India denied them.
Modi also declined Trump’s invitation to make a stopover in the US while returning from Canada. Modi instead travelled to Croatia.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called Modi’s phone call with Trump a “triple jhatka” on Wednesday afternoon.
The Congress party said the call, which the government described as a diplomatic achievement, was actually a “triple jolt” to India. The party highlighted that the call happened while Pakistan Army chief General Asim Munir was expected to have lunch with Trump at the White House later that day.
“Asim Munir, the man whose inflammatory, incendiary, and provocative remarks were linked directly to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attacks, is having lunch with President Trump in the White House.”
“Is this why President Trump abandoned the G7 Summit a day early…” Ramesh asked on X. He wanted to know whether Modi raised this matter with the US President. He said Modi should have informed Trump about the direct link between Munir’s unacceptable remarks and the motive behind the Pahalgam attack.
General Munir had made inflammatory and outrageous comments days before the Pahalgam terror attack. He described Kashmir as Islamabad’s “jugular vein.”
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar flagged those comments. He said the terrorists who killed 26 people based on their faith had been driven by Munir’s “extreme religious outlook.”
India’s Congress party said that Munir’s visit to the US—while Modi and Trump were discussing a terror attack attributed to Pakistan’s deep state—reflected poorly on India.
Ramesh also pointed out that Trump had repeatedly claimed—14 times, according to him—that he had “sure as hell helped settle the problem between India and Pak.” He also referred to a top US general who described Pakistan as a “phenomenal” partner in counter-terror operations.
Ramesh said these events together amounted to a “triple jhatka.”
“Indian diplomacy is being shattered and the Prime Minister is totally silent,” he said. He called on the Prime Minister to brief Parliament in full about the phone call with Trump. He added, “For 37 days the Prime Minister did not say anything... today we are told he had a 35-minute call with President Trump... (who) has also put out a statement from the White House. There is a difference between the two statements... Why cannot the PM call an all-party meet (and) say the same thing (he told Mr Trump) in Parliament? Take opposition leaders into confidence and say the same thing...”
BJP’s “Congenital Liar” Reaction
BJP’s Amit Malviya reacted sharply to Ramesh, calling him a “congenital liar – much like Rahul Gandhi.” He pointed to Ramesh’s claim that the US had issued a readout of the call.
Malviya stated that as of 1:40 p.m., the US had not released any such statement. “He is now spreading another falsehood by claiming that Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s statement doesn’t match the US readout – while dramatically waving his phone around,” Malviya said.
“But here is the catch: the readout he is citing is from January 2025! There is no official US release yet on the latest call,” he added. “The Congress and its troll army simply cannot digest the fact PM Modi told President Trump in clear terms – India neither needs nor accepts any third-party mediation.”
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also attacked the Congress, calling it the “biggest supplier, spreader and cultivator” of fake news.
Meanwhile, Congress was not the only one raising questions about the Foreign Secretary’s version of the call. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said Trump must tweet that the US had no role in the ceasefire and should take back his previous comments.
