During his two-day visit to Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the northeastern region, which the central government previously overlooked, is now witnessing rapid development under the BJP-led administration. He remarked that he has personally taken on the region’s brand ambassador role.
Speaking at the Jhumoir dance event at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati, Modi highlighted Assam and the Northeast's significant progress under his leadership.
Prime Minister Modi reflected about spending a night at Kaziranga National Park, stating that he is the only Prime Minister ever to do so.
“I am the only Prime Minister of this country who has spent a night at Kaziranga National Park,” he expressed.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the government's commitment to preserving Assam’s rich heritage, announcing that Assamese has been granted Classical Language status, a long-awaited demand of the people. He also highlighted the inclusion of Charaideo Maidam in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list, reinforcing Assam’s historical importance.
Additionally, Modi paid tribute to Lachit Borphukan, the legendary Ahom warrior, acknowledging that he had not received the national recognition he deserved.
“To commemorate Lachit Borphukan’s legacy, a 125-foot statue of the 16th-century Ahom General has been built in Assam. The government has also launched Jana Jatiya Gaurav Divas to honour the contributions of Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities,” he conveyed.
Prime Minister Modi reiterated his government's commitment to service and progress, highlighting the BJP administration’s focus on the welfare and development of tribal communities.
He also detailed various key welfare programs launched by the government, particularly emphasising improving the lives of rural populations and tea garden workers.
“To ensure better maternal care, the BJP government has provided financial assistance to pregnant women working in tea gardens. Furthermore, with the construction of 350 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and over 100 model tea garden schools, Assam is expected to witness notable improvements in healthcare and education,” he noted.
Prime Minister Modi spoke about the rapid development of the Northeast and shared his optimism about Assam’s future. He expressed heartfelt appreciation for the performers, believing that the Jhumoir dance programme would gain widespread recognition.
He reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to Assam’s cultural, social, and economic progress in his speech. His vision aims to bring Assam and the Northeast into a new era of prosperity and global prominence. He praised the state’s cultural and developmental achievements and looked forward to another milestone event, similar to the record-breaking Bihu dance performance in 2023.
Modi also acknowledged the ambitious goal of setting a new world record with the Jhumoir dance event, recalling the historic moment in 2023 when 11,500 artists performed the Bihu dance, earning a place in global records.
The Prime Minister said, “I was eagerly waiting for another grand event.” He congratulated the people of Assam for their efforts in organising the celebration.
He also praised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the people of Assam, highlighting that such cultural events elevate the state’s prestige and enhance India’s pride.
The event has attracted significant international attention, with over 60 ambassadors in attendance, reflecting the region’s increasing global recognition.
