The Government of India headed by PM Narendra Modi will be completing three years in office. In all, it can be argued that this government has gone through the initial years in power quite well focused on the job at hand, and getting ready to face the general election in about two years. Modi led Government has taken key initiatives in various infrastructure sectors to make the country self reliant and self sufficient. It is trying to achieve this by removing the bottlenecks, placing a transparent system in place and making the administration more accountable. The penetration level of providing electricity to the remote villages of the country and providing new LPG connections to the poor village families is phenomenal and should be applauded. The fact that power and petroleum ministry is headed by minister of state with independent charge and not even a cabinet minister clearly shows the commitment of the government to serve the people. The railway stations are looking cleaner and brighter and most important stations are now providing free Wi-Fi is an another important measure taken by the government to bring in cleanness and new technologies in public domain. At the same time, it should be mentioned that the bus stations in most of the cities are still dirty and ugly and I wish the surface and transport minister start talking to his counterparts in respective state governments to bring in tidiness in the bus stations.
Merging of different versions of State bank and bringing them all under one umbrella of State Bank of India and making it a biggest financial institution is another import economic reform to bring in more synergy and focus in key economic measures. It should be mentioned that this big initiative was done without any whisper from the left dominated bank employee unions. India is such a big and diversified country with elections at every turn it is little bit difficult to cater all sections of the society. Despite this, Modi Government is able to maintain “trust between government and people” as often referred by PM Modi as an important parameter for effective governance.
Having achieved great success in key sectors, this Government has failed miserably in three areas a) Kashmir, b) Education and Human resources and c) establishing media narrative.
a) Kashmir: Initially, the government started well and to an extent succeeded in bringing some sense to this critical issue. Any violation across LOC by the enemy state was retaliated with same vigor and most of the infiltration attempts were treated accordingly. Even at international level, GOI had little success in shifting the focus from Kashmir to Baluchistan. They also made it clear to China that any economic activity passing through Baluchistan is not in the good interest of India. It appears that killing of a terrorist Burhan Wani, seems to have ignited a whole set of rebellion in the Valley and suddenly both the state and central government has become mute spectators. The unnecessary restrain by the police force against stone-pelter is very disturbing. The visual of “masked mob” attacking the armed force and making them run is not a good sign of what is happening in Kashmir. Further, so many educational institutions were razed with fire and army and government were not able to control anti-social element is another failed response from the government. The priority should be to bring the law and order under control and ensure people have a normal life. Much needs to be done in Kashmir and needs to be done faster.
b) Education and Human resource: This is another department where it seems that the Government has gone for an “eternal sleep”. Despite some short comings and bad publicity previous HRD minister was doing her job quite well. This is the department which controls the educational institutions, which are basically dominated by so-called “left wing intellectuals” who always take pride in taking anti-Hindu stand and enjoy ridiculing Indian culture and tradition. They enjoyed an undisputed and uninterrupted dominance over the historical and educational narrative for close to seven decades. A strong nationalist government with a clear objective was expected to change this. Three years have gone and nothing has changed. The ill conceived ideas of the UPA era “Right to Education” act if continued in the present form will unequally favor minority institutions and ensure that all good Hindu educational institutions will be closed some day or the other. The pricking issue here is since this is an educational act they directly come under article 15c, which gives exemption to the minority institutions and they no longer need to follow the guidelines laid by the GOI under this act. The appeal from people familiar with this issue is the request to the GOI to provide the Hindu institutions a level playing field with minority institutions. HRD ministry has turned “totally deaf” to even make a statement on this issue. In fact, HRD and Science and Technology ministry put together can bring in huge synergy and momentum in building knowledge based society of next generation with nationalist appeal. It looks to me that GOI is least bothered to shake-up things which can bring a paradigm shift in shaping and developing the young minds of this country. It will be appreciable, at least in the near future, PM gives some best performing ministers to head these important ministries. In case, PM ignores this, then it is a clear case of an “amazing opportunity gone out of the window”.
c) Media: This is the third issue where GOI has failed completely. Indian MSM always takes anti-Hindu and anti-India positions. They glorify terrorist and support the corrupt dynasty. It is really a shame that this government can’t even hold on to its decision to impose one day ban on NDTV. I don’t understand what prevents GOI from organizing the daily press briefing and explain the issues of the day and GOI’s response and I am sure this will help to build a positive and un-biased media narrative.
In conclusion, I am not very sure whether these three issues will have any major impact during the next general election. The fact is, these are the key fundamental issues in which core-BJP supporters wanted some positive actions. These are the issues over which the ideological platform of the BJP was built-upon. It will be an immense pleasure to see some actions by the elected government to fulfill the core demand over which it propelled itself. It is too early to write off and claim that Modi ji will ignore these issues completely. Let us wait and watch.
The decision to shift a very competent Raksha Mantri to govern a small state is little bit disturbing. To an extent, he was trying to remove the shackles of the Defense Ministry. Though, it can be treated as a internal matter of BJP, it shows the government in the poor light when it is unable to replace him with a full-time independent minister. I wish PM appoints a new Raksha Mantri soon. It is also surprising that GOI takes long time to appoint key vacancies. Despite huge political uncertainty happening in an important state like TN, GOI has not even appointed a governor for close to eight months. It appointed DG for CPRF only after the last week moist attack on forces. GOI need to change this attitude.
No article will be complete without writing the huge electoral success of BJP in almost all recently held elections. I really wish, Modi-Shah combo doesn’t become complacent of this success and remain focus and get ready for the next general election.
