Two temples were set on fire and idols were damaged in two temples in Kishanganj, Bihar on Sunday.
A Durga temple and a Hanuman Temple were destroyed in the incident that took place at around 3 AM on 12 March at Mastan Chowk in Bagalbari Panchayat in Kochadhaman block of Kishanganj district. No arrests have been made so far.
Although the Hanuman temple suffered partial damage, the Goddess Durga temple was reduced to ashes. Idols in both temples were damaged by the fire, including a Shivling and other idols.
Between the two temples, the shop of a shopkeeper named Bajrang was also gutted, and the house of Madan Lal, the priest of the Bajrangbali temple, was also gutted.
A police team reached the spot as soon as they received the information. The fire was put out by the villagers with the assistance of the police. Police and magistrates were deployed together at different places to tackle the sensitive situation.
After the incident, angry people started creating a ruckus by jamming Mastan Chowk and demanding the arrest of the accused at the earliest. The district administration, which reached the spot with a team, pacified the atmosphere and pacified the people and got the jam cleared.
As per the locals, the centre of faith of Hindus has been targeted with the intention of disturbing the peace of the area. People demanded that the people who broke the pucca temple and the temple on the spot should be identified by forming an SIT team and arrested at the earliest.
A posse of security personnel has been deployed in the area in the wake of the protest. In a statement issued later on Sunday, the Bihar Police said one temple and four shops were “affected” in the “accidental” fire.
“Security personnel have been deployed in large numbers in Kochadhaman to maintain law and order. It was an accidental fire. The process has been initiated by the authorities concerned to provide compensation to the affected people. Besides, the district administration is also in touch with locals for the restoration of the affected temple,” the statement said, urging people not to spread rumours.
DSP Ajit Pratap Singh said that the matter is being investigated and legal action will be taken against those who are found guilty.
