Amidst the ongoing strife and unrest in Manipur, the state government is battling with a pressing issue. Armed miscreants donned in police and CDO (Commando) uniforms have emerged as a growing menace. Individuals armed with weapons and wearing police and CDO uniforms have become a significant concern as they freely move around Manipur, causing chaos and unrest. The situation is critical and requires immediate attention and action.
A senior official in the Manipur government stated that these individuals are involved in activities like extortion and murder within the state.
“Armed miscreants are roaming in the streets masquerading as CDOs and policemen and conducting unlawful activities like extortion, threats, and killing of people,” said Manipur additional home secretary Maharabam Pradeep while briefing media persons at the Manipur police headquarters in Imphal.
He added, “The state police is making an all-out effort to restore normalcy. But such acts of armed miscreants have hampered the efforts that the police have been making.”
The official provided additional details, explaining that the Manipur police have implemented a series of measures to address this growing issue.
“Manipur police firmly committed to curb this menace,” said Maharabam Pradeep.
In a collaborative effort between the Manipur police and security forces, five individuals outfitted in camouflage attire and in possession of advanced weapons were arrested. A statement from the Manipur police conveyed their intent to rigorously pursue legal action against these individuals, labeling them as "anti-social elements."
Furthermore, Maharabam Pradeep, the Manipur additional home secretary, drew attention to a notable increase in complaints concerning extortion and threats within the state's valley districts. This development underscores the growing concern and the urgency for addressing the situation effectively.
Conversely, Manipur witnessed disruptions to normal life, as it marked the commencement of a 48-hour statewide bandh organized by various civil society organizations. The primary demand of this bandh was the unconditional release of the five individuals who had been arrested.
The effects of the bandh were evident as shops, markets, and educational institutions remained closed, while public transportation services were significantly disrupted. These developments underscore the impact of the ongoing situation and the strength of the demand for the release of the arrested individuals.
