The Minnesota State Legislature is taking a significant step by advancing Senate File 4115, a resolution that seeks to acknowledge and condemn Hinduphobia and discrimination against Hindus formally. Introduced in March 2026, the proposal has already reached an important stage after receiving unanimous support from the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee.
Backed by members across party lines, the resolution reflects growing concern over incidents of bias, including hateful speech and acts of vandalism directed at Hindu temples and individuals in the state.
The measure clearly explains Hinduphobia as a pattern of negative and hostile attitudes toward Hinduism and those who follow the faith. It highlights that such prejudice can go beyond words and may lead to harassment or even physical harm. Lawmakers backing the resolution have expressed that recognising this issue formally is an important step toward addressing it effectively and ensuring that no community feels unsafe or targeted because of their beliefs.
In addition to highlighting the problem, the resolution also acknowledges the valuable role played by Hindu Americans in Minnesota and across the United States. With a population of over four million, the community has made meaningful contributions to the country’s cultural diversity and its economic growth. The proposal stresses that these contributions deserve recognition and respect, reinforcing the idea that all religious groups should be treated equally.
To tackle the issue more practically, the resolution calls for action from state agencies, law enforcement bodies, and educational institutions. It encourages the introduction of anti-bias training programs and the improvement of systems used to report and track hate-related incidents. Supporters believe these steps will help authorities respond more effectively while also raising awareness about discrimination faced by Hindus.
The resolution has gained strong backing from the community, with more than 400 individuals and organisations supporting it, including the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA). Advocates say the initiative is about ensuring that Hindu residents in Minnesota are able to practice their faith freely, without fear or prejudice. Overall, the effort aims to create a safer and more inclusive environment where every individual, regardless of religion, is treated with dignity and respect.
