The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a ₹449 crore contract with Accord Software and Systems Private Limited, Bengaluru, for the procurement of 20 Enhanced Capability Global Navigation Satellite System (ECGNSS) jammers for the Indian Navy. The acquisition is expected to significantly strengthen the Navy’s electronic warfare capabilities and improve its ability to operate safely in challenging maritime environments.
The agreement was signed in New Delhi on June 10, 2026, under the “Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)” category. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh was present during the signing ceremony. The project requires a minimum of 75 per cent indigenous content, reflecting the government’s continued focus on the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make-in-India initiatives.
The ECGNSS jammers are advanced systems designed to counter hostile satellite navigation capabilities. They can disrupt the acquisition and tracking of satellite signals by enemy Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers. The systems are also equipped with signal spoofing and deceptive jamming functions, allowing them to mislead adversaries by providing false positioning information.
These capabilities will help protect Indian naval platforms from surveillance and tracking attempts. In modern warfare, satellite-based navigation and targeting systems play a critical role in military operations. The ability to interfere with or manipulate such systems can provide a major operational advantage during conflicts and strategic deployments.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the induction of these jammers will enable Indian Navy ships to conduct operations safely in complex and multi-threat environments. The systems are expected to enhance operational security by reducing the effectiveness of enemy navigation and tracking networks.
The acquisition comes at a time when regional security challenges are increasing. Countries such as China and Pakistan have invested heavily in space-based surveillance and satellite navigation infrastructure. Reports have suggested that Pakistan recently launched spy satellites with support from China, raising concerns about the monitoring of Indian military movements and activities.
The new ECGNSS jammers will serve as an effective countermeasure against such threats. By disrupting or deceiving hostile navigation systems, the equipment will help prevent adversaries from accurately tracking Indian naval assets. This capability is expected to improve the survivability of naval vessels operating in contested waters and sensitive maritime zones.
Accord Software and Systems Private Limited, the Bengaluru-based company selected for the project, has extensive experience in satellite navigation technologies. The contract highlights the growing contribution of private Indian firms in the defence manufacturing sector. It also reflects the government's efforts to encourage greater participation from domestic companies in the development of critical military technologies.
The deal is part of the Defence Ministry’s broader strategy to diversify suppliers while ensuring that advanced defence technologies are designed, developed, and produced within the country. Increased indigenous production reduces dependence on foreign vendors and helps maintain greater control over sensitive military systems.
The ECGNSS jammer programme also supports India’s wider defence modernisation efforts. In recent years, the country has made major investments in electronic warfare systems, radar technologies, missile programmes, and other advanced defence platforms. The emphasis on domestic manufacturing is aimed at building a stronger defence industrial base and enhancing long-term self-reliance.
Apart from strengthening military capabilities, the project is expected to provide economic benefits. The contract is likely to create employment opportunities across the defence manufacturing ecosystem. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) involved in supplying components and related technologies are expected to benefit from the programme.
From a strategic perspective, the deployment of ECGNSS jammers will improve the Indian Navy’s ability to operate effectively in high-risk environments. Denying adversaries access to accurate satellite navigation data can provide a valuable tactical advantage during maritime operations. The systems will contribute to a stronger and more secure maritime defence framework, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region, where geopolitical competition continues to intensify.
The Ministry of Defence described the agreement as an important milestone in its efforts to strengthen defence preparedness and promote indigenous military technology. The contract supports India’s long-term objective of becoming a net security provider in the region while ensuring that its armed forces are equipped with advanced, domestically developed systems capable of meeting future security challenges.
