During his speech at the BRICS summit on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Middle East is close to a large-scale war. "The military action that started a year ago in Gaza has now spread to Lebanon. Other countries in the region are also affected," said Putin at a gathering of international leaders in Kazan.
Putin continued saying, "The level of confrontation between Israel and Iran has sharply risen. This is all reminiscent of a chain reaction and puts the whole Middle East on the verge of full-scale war.” Putin stated during the conference, which was attended by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, that the Middle East's violence will not stop until an independent Palestinian state is established.
"The key demand for restoring peace and stability on Palestinian territories is carrying out the two-state formula approved by the UN Security Council and General Assembly," Putin continued. "Correcting the historical injustice towards the Palestinian people" would be the next step, he concluded. "Until this question is resolved, it will not be possible to break the vicious circle of violence."
Putin underlined in his concluding remarks that reestablishing peace and security in the Palestinian territories depends on the two-state model that has been adopted by the UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions. Since a Hamas attack last year, Israel has persisted in its ruthless bombardment on Gaza in defiance of a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire.
According to local health authorities, approximately 100,300 people have been injured and over 42,700 people have died, primarily women and children. Due to the prolonged blockade caused by Israel's attack on Gaza, nearly all of the territory's residents have been forced to flee, and there are now acute shortages of food, clean water, and medication.
The International Court of Justice is considering a genocide complaint against Israel for its activities in Gaza.
