The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced the permanent stationing of a special team from the National Security Guard (NSG) in Jammu to boost counter-terrorism efforts. This important step shows the government's commitment to quickly and effectively deal with terror threats, especially with the rise in attacks in the Jammu region.
The NSG, also referred to as the "Black Cats," is well known for its proficiency in rapid response and counterterrorism operations. High-stakes anti-terror missions would be carried out by the Jammu-based team in close coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir Police's Special Operations Group (SOG). According to officials, the NSG had finished a thorough evaluation of crucial sites in Jammu, guaranteeing a strong security network to safeguard important assets. The government's determination to combat the evolving threat scenario is demonstrated by the elite force's first sustained presence in Jammu and Kashmir since the start of terrorism in the area.
The decision to keep the NSG permanently stationed in Jammu shows a change in strategy, focusing on taking action before threats arise rather than responding to them. This move aims to improve cooperation between central and state forces, allowing for more targeted operations against terrorist groups.
Established in 1984 under the National Security Guard Act, the NSG operates as a specialised federal contingency force under the MHA. Originally formed in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star, its primary mandate includes counter-terrorism, anti-hijacking, and hostage rescue operations. NSG personnel are drawn from both the Indian Army and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), ensuring a blend of combat expertise and operational versatility.
The decision to station the National Security Guard (NSG) in the Jammu region comes at a time when terrorist activities are increasing. With more militants crossing the border and local groups recruiting members, having the NSG permanently stationed there is a smart and timely move. The NSG’s quick response to attacks will help reduce delays in action, strengthening the security of the area. Their skills in investigating blasts and handling electronic threats will also play a key role in dealing with new dangers. This strategic move demonstrates the government's steadfast commitment to fighting terrorism and preserving the integrity of India's northernmost Union Territory.
