The Union Home Ministry has revoked the Foreign Contribution Registration Act (FCRA) licences of six non-governmental organisations (NGOs) due to alleged breaches of FCRA regulations, misuse of foreign grants, and accusations of activities such as religious conversion.
The cancellation came following scrutiny by the Centre in March-April this year, said officials familiar with the developments.
According to the media report, the six NGOs under scrutiny by the Centre were the Delhi Diocese Overseas Grant Fund, Institute of Economic Growth (IEG), Samuel Foundation Charitable India Trust, Diocesan Society Church of North, Jesus and Mary Delhi Educational Society, and Hemophilia Federation of India (HFI).
Sources reported that in the first week of April, the Union Home Ministry revoked the registration of at least five NGOs, citing alleged violations of various provisions of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act.
According to sources, the Home Ministry cancelled the FCRA registration of the NGOs because they allegedly used funds for purposes outside their mandate. The NGOs were found to have contravened FCRA provisions by engaging in activities that were not permitted under the law.
There were 16,301 NGOs with valid FCRA licences as of July 17, 2023. The Centre has cancelled the FCRA licences of more than 6,600 NGOs in the last five years for violation of the law. Overall, FCRA licences of 20,693 NGOs have been cancelled in the last decade.
As per data revealed in Parliament last year, between the financial years 2019-2020 and 2021-2022, a total of Rs 55,741.51 crore was received in foreign contributions by 13,520 associations or NGOs registered under the FCRA.
