In a significant step to strengthen India’s internal security framework, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved the expansion of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) by adding two new battalions. The newly sanctioned battalion will have 1,025 personnel, increasing the total strength of CISF battalions from 13 to 15, and that will create 2,050 new posts.
The officers of the rank of senior commandant are in charge of leading the newly appointed battalions. This decision highlights the government’s commitment to strengthening the security of critical national infrastructure, industrial units and public spaces nationwide. This battalion also plays a vital role as it meets the growing demands of the CISF, especially in areas like internal security and management of high-security prisons. This move and the recently approved Mahila battalion will boost national security and create over 2,000 new job positions.
With this expansion, the total strength of CISF will increase to around two lakhs. The reserve battalion has specially trained and equipped personnel experienced in managing the security of high-security prisons and other enterprises. The other battalions will be in charge of improving the CISF's rapid emergency response capabilities. The available dedicated reserve units are equipped with transport fleets and adequate weapons, which means more rapid deployment and more effective management of critical circumstances, improving public safety and security.
"The new strength will reduce stress on existing personnel and translate into improved leave and weekly relief opportunities for personnel," CISF Inspector General Ajay Dahiya stated.
CISF is one of India's central armed police forces, founded under the CISF Act 1968. Originally developed to deliver complete security to public sector undertakings (PSUs), CISF has evolved into a multi-purpose security organisation responsible for protecting required infrastructure nationwide.
CISF force protects vital industrial installations, government buildings, nuclear and space establishments, airports, seaports and historical monuments, including the Taj Mahal. In addition, CISF provides consultancy services to manage security for government and private sector organisations.
