Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded sharply to former US President Donald Trump's suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico, asking, "Why don't we call it Mexican America?" Shienbaum, Mexico's feisty new president, responded boldly to Donald Trump's latest geopolitical attack, launching a battle of words that has captivated the global audience. Armed with a 400-year-old map, Sheinbaum did not mince words when criticising Trump's proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America."
On Wednesday at a news conference, Sheinbaum showed a large 1607 map of North America labelled "América Mexicana" (Mexican America). She said slyly, "Why don't we call it Mexican America?" Doesn't it sound pretty?"
Donald Trump's controversial plan following his re-election, the former US president, has renewed concerns with Mexico by suggesting that the Gulf of Mexico be renamed to reflect "American" control. "The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name," Trump stated Tuesday, reinforcing his claim that Mexico is "essentially run by the cartels."
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene soon supported Trump, promising to propose legislation making the name change official. "ASAP," she pledged, as MAGA friends backed the proposal.
Sheinbaum, Mexico's first female president and a communist scientist, did not mince words. "They misinformed him," she remarked politely before being more direct.
"In Mexico, individuals reign. And we will work and understand each other with President Trump's administration while maintaining our sovereignty as a free, independent and sovereign country."
Her statements, delivered with calm resolve, reverberated online, with videos of her speech immediately becoming viral.
Tensions between Sheinbaum and Trump extend beyond maps and cartels. Trump has suggested a 25% tax on Mexican goods, which Sheinbaum has promised to respond with equivalent duties. She has also adopted a challenging but strategic position on immigration, indicating that Mexico might restrict the reception of evicted immigrants to specific ethnicities while pursuing reimbursement from the US.
While Sheinbaum's offer to change the name of North America to "Mexican America" was most likely intended as a joke, it highlights the escalating enmity between the two presidents. The map she exhibited serves as an eloquent counter to Trump's territorial ambitions by highlighting Mexico's historical and cultural origins.
As both leaders settle into what promises to be an unstable connection, one thing is clear: Sheinbaum is not afraid to hold her stance. Whether it's tariffs, maps, or sovereignty, she's prepared to defend Mexico with wit, history and determination.
