Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is "extremely skeptical" about the idea of sending European troops to Ukraine and does not agree with the proposal from the United Kingdom and France, according to Italian media reports on Monday.
On Sunday, Meloni joined a Leaders' Summit in London, where over a dozen European leaders and the Canadian Prime Minister gathered to discuss a peace plan for Ukraine. This meeting followed a week of intense diplomatic talks. The Italian Prime Minister had one-on-one meetings with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “The meeting allowed to reaffirm Italy's support for Ukraine and its people and the commitment, together with European and Western partners and the United States, to build a just and lasting peace, which ensures a future of sovereignty, security and freedom for Ukraine,” read a statement issued by the Italian PM's office after Meloni's meeting Zelensky.
According to the leading Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Meloni stated that Rome is willing to take part in a joint European mission in Ukraine, but only if it is led by the United Nations and if the fighting comes to an end. Regarding the unsuccessful negotiations between Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump in Washington, which ended in a disagreement, Meloni expressed regret over the situation. However, she urged people not to turn it into a matter of taking sides like supporters in a rivalry.
During the meeting, Meloni emphasised the need for unity among Western countries. She suggested hosting a summit between European leaders and the US to strengthen their relationship, which has been strained due to the war in Ukraine.
