The central government has started investigating the reported data breach at Tata Electronics after reports claimed that sensitive information related to Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models appeared on the dark web. The incident has raised concerns over the security of Apple's supply chain and the protection of confidential manufacturing data.
On Thursday, the Centre confirmed that it is looking into the matter. Responding to questions on whether the government was treating the incident as a cybercrime case, S Krishnan, secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), said, "We are investigating," reported news agency ANI.
The government's response came after an earlier Reuters report claimed that a ransomware group had stolen files from Tata Electronics. The report said the leaked documents contain detailed supplier information, component lists, and photographs linked to Apple's yet-to-be-released iPhone 18 Pro devices.
According to documents reviewed by Reuters and a source familiar with the matter, the leaked files reveal important details about the suppliers and components involved in making the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models. The documents reportedly provide a detailed view of Apple's production network for these devices.
The records include at least six files that connect several iPhone components with the companies supplying them. These files reportedly cover important parts such as chips used on the main circuit board, battery components, and camera modules. The documents also contain information on hundreds of parts expected to be used in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
The leaked information reportedly shows where Apple sources the same component from multiple suppliers. It also identifies areas where the company depends on only a few vendors. This information could reveal Apple's negotiating position with suppliers and highlight possible weak points in its supply chain.
The reported breach has raised concerns over the exposure of one of Apple's most closely protected business operations. The company maintains a highly complex global supplier network that manufactures different parts used in the iPhone. Apple keeps details of this network confidential to protect its business strategy and manufacturing process.
Industry observers quoted by Reuters believe that such information could prove valuable to competitors, counterfeit manufacturers, and suppliers. Competitors may gain insights into Apple's production plans. Counterfeiters could use the details to copy products more accurately. Suppliers may also study Apple's sourcing strategy to understand its purchasing decisions and business relationships.
The incident could also affect the partnership between Apple and Tata Electronics. In recent years, Tata Electronics has become an important manufacturing partner for Apple as the company continues to expand production outside China. Tata Electronics supplies components for Apple products and also assembles iPhones as a contract manufacturer. The reported leak may increase concerns about data security within this growing partnership.
Apple has steadily increased its manufacturing presence in India over the past few years. Tata Electronics now plays a key role in this expansion. The company supports Apple's efforts to diversify its production network and reduce its dependence on a single manufacturing location. Any security breach involving confidential production data could draw attention to supply chain protection and cybersecurity measures.
Apple is widely expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September. The company has not officially announced the devices yet. Reports suggest that the leaked documents contain details related to products that are still under development, making the incident more significant.
The reported breach comes at a time when Apple is already dealing with rising production costs. The company recently increased prices for some iPad and MacBook models following higher memory and storage chip costs. Market analysts have also suggested that iPhone prices could increase in the coming months.
The government's investigation will now focus on understanding the reported breach and its impact. Officials are expected to examine whether the incident involved cybercrime and assess the extent of the reported data exposure. The outcome of the investigation could have important implications for cybersecurity practices and supply chain security in India's growing electronics manufacturing sector.
