In a significant political development, People's Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti dissolved the full structure of her party with immediate effect on Saturday, shortly after the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election results were announced. As per ANI, Mufti stated that a new structure, including office bearers, various wings, and internal bodies, would be established in due course following consultations with senior party leaders. This restructuring move aims to rebuild and reorient the PDP's organisational framework to align with its current vision, following the outcome of the recent elections.
This announcement comes on the heels of the Union Territory’s assembly elections held on October 8, in which the National Conference, in alliance with Congress, gained a clear majority, securing the people's mandate. The former Chief Minister expressed satisfaction with the results, stating, “I am happy with the way people have voted. 'Gadbad karna ka koi chance nahi hai ab' (there is no chance to mess around now). It seemed like if the mandate wasn't clear, dirty tricks could have been used to defeat the people's will,” she remarked at the PDP headquarters in Srinagar. Mufti’s statement reflects her relief at the clarity of the mandate, suggesting that a less decisive outcome might have risked undermining the democratic process.
Mufti extended her congratulations to the leadership of the National Conference and Congress, emphasising her support for the people’s choice of a stable government. "I congratulate the National Conference-Congress leadership; they have won spectacularly. I also want to congratulate the people of Jammu and Kashmir for voting for a stable government. The situation in Jammu and Kashmir had been dire since August 5, 2019, and people faced numerous problems. Forming a stable government was essential,” she added. Her comments highlighted the hardships faced by the region’s people since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and significantly changed its political landscape. According to Mufti, a stable government would be crucial to address these challenges and work toward regional stability.
The election results showcased a decisive victory for the National Conference, which secured 42 seats, followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with 29 seats. The Congress party, in alliance with the National Conference, obtained 6 seats, while the PDP, led by Mufti, managed to win only 3 seats. The results underscore the support for the National Conference-Congress alliance and indicate the PDP’s need for reassessment and potential restructuring. This election is the first in the region since its transition to a Union Territory, making the results particularly significant as they indicate public sentiment toward the current political landscape.
Mufti’s decision to dissolve the PDP’s structure is seen as a response to the party’s low performance in the election and a step toward preparing for a refreshed approach. The party restructuring, combined with Mufti's supportive statements toward the winning alliance, suggests an openness to fostering stability in Jammu and Kashmir.
