Meerut Police issued a stern warning on Thursday against offering namaz on roads, stating that violators could face strict legal consequences, including the cancellation of passports and revocation of driving licenses. The directive was announced ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr and Ramzan's last Friday prayers. Meerut Superintendent of Police (City) Ayush Vikram Singh emphasised that Eid prayers should only be performed in local mosques or designated Eidgahs, not on public roads.
Meanwhile, Meerut Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vipin Tada stated that meetings had been held at both district and police station levels, with necessary instructions to enforce the directive.
“Strict action will be taken against those trying to spread rumours or incite unrest through social media. We are keeping a close watch on social media platforms, and any attempt to disrupt communal harmony will be dealt with firmly," The news agency IANS quoted the SSP.
SSP Tada stated that security has been strengthened with the deployment of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel, along with flag marches being conducted in the district. He also highlighted that the administration works closely with community leaders and religious figures to maintain peace. Special security measures have been implemented in sensitive areas to ensure law and order. Additionally, Union Minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Jayant Singh Chaudhary announced that drones would be used for aerial surveillance while local intelligence teams actively monitor the situation.
“If criminal cases are registered against individuals, their passports and licenses can be cancelled, and obtaining a new passport would become difficult without a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the court. Such documents remain confiscated until the individuals are cleared by the court," Chaudhary stated.
He stated that uniformed and plainclothes officers would be stationed at all sensitive locations.
Additionally, police officials confirmed that security measures have been heightened across Uttar Pradesh. In Lucknow alone, over 1,000 police personnel and nine Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) companies have been deployed to strengthen security.
“Proper security and traffic arrangements have been made in Lucknow in view of Alvida Namaz. More than 1,000 police personnel and nine companies of PAC have been deployed in the district. Proper traffic diversions have been made to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. Police officials also held peace committee meetings with the religious leaders and also appealed to offer namaz in their religious places. Monitoring will be done through CCTV cameras and drones," Joint Commissioner of Police for Law and Order, Babloo Kumar, stated.
