In a move underscoring rising border tensions between Bangladesh and India, India summoned the Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Nurul Islam, to New Delhi on Monday, just a day after Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma regarding recent border disputes. According to a report by news agency ANI, Nurul Islam was caught departing South Block after being summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs.
Border strains between India and Bangladesh have intensified after Dhaka alleged that India was trying to build fences at five places along the India-Bangladesh border, which violates bilateral agreements. As per the Home Affairs Advisor Lt. Gen. (retd.) of Bangladesh Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, clashes have broken out in five areas, including (north-west) Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Lalmonirhat and the Tin Bigha Corridor.
Chowdhury reasoned that "several problems have arisen on the Bangladesh-India border" due to unbalanced agreements signed by the previous government. He blamed the former Sheikh Hasina government for negotiating uneven agreements, which he claimed led to this fencing conflict at 160 sites between 2010 and 2023.
Meanwhile, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma, who arrived at Bangladesh's foreign ministry on Sunday, stated after the discussion that Dhaka and New Delhi "have understandings with regard to fencing the border for security".
"Our two border guard enforcements - BSF and BGB (Border Security Force and Border Guard Bangladesh) - have been in communication in this regard. We expect that this understanding will be implemented, and there will be a cooperative approach to combating crimes along the border," Verma said.
India wants to work together with Bangladesh to secure its borders. Meanwhile, diplomatic lines remain open, with both sides expressing a willingness to maintain and expand ties despite challenges.
