MEA Secretary holds talks with UNOCT on capacity building in counter-terrorism

Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West) Sanjay Verma met with the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) Vladimir Voronkov in New York. During their meeting, they discussed various topics, including the G20 Delhi Declaration, issues related to victims of terrorism, and capacity building in counter-terrorism.
During the conversation, MEA Secretary (West) Sanjay Verma expressed his appreciation for the United Nations' efforts in countering terrorism and commended Vladimir Voronkov's leadership in this regard. He also reaffirmed India's commitment to supporting UNOCT's initiatives.

During the 51st Annual Conference of the Indian Society of International Law (ISIL), Sanjay Verma, Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West), addressed several pressing global challenges. He particularly emphasized the concerns shared by the international community regarding issues like international terrorism, transnational crimes, and the proliferation of illicit drugs.
Verma's remarks, as conveyed in a press release from the Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted the increasing importance of international law within the context of a rapidly changing world. This underscores the significance of global cooperation and legal frameworks in addressing these complex and multifaceted challenges. Sanjay Verma's engagement at the conference signals India's commitment to actively participate in international discussions and collaborations aimed at addressing these issues effectively.
He said, "Challenges like international terrorism, transnational crimes, illicit drug and human trafficking, money laundering, climate change, cyber-crime, corruption, and health are other new mainstream concerns for the international community."
In a comprehensive overview of India's diplomatic engagements, Secretary (West) Sanjay Verma highlighted the nation's active participation in various international forums throughout the year. These engagements included prominent gatherings such as the C20 (Civil Society Engagement Group of the G20), the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), among others.
Verma's statement, as reported by the Ministry of External Affairs, underscored India's dynamic role in multiple international platforms. These forums serve as critical arenas for diplomatic discussions and cooperation on a wide range of global issues. India's consistent involvement in these initiatives reflects its commitment to contributing to international discourse and fostering collaborations aimed at addressing pressing global challenges.
"India's diplomatic calendar has never been busier. G20, SCO, BRICS, or BIMSTEC, to name a few of our engagements, which capture our concurrent and diverse interests," said Verma.
He emphasized India's evolving diplomatic focus to address rapidly evolving global challenges, "Atmanirbharta or strategic autonomy, multi-polarity oriented, a net security provider, first responder, a force for international good and future-oriented are expressions that capture the spirit of India's changing diplomatic priorities to meet fast morphing global challenges."
Secretary Verma also emphasized that India has made significant contributions to various facets of international law, encompassing international humanitarian law, treaty law, diplomatic and foreign relations, foreign trade and shipping, and human rights. These contributions have brought about substantial improvements in the lives of Indian citizens and people worldwide.
He further articulated India's strong support for the reform and restructuring of the United Nations, with the aim of aligning the organization with the requirements of its member states.
