Mazagon Dockyards Limited (MDL), a state-owned entity, has achieved a significant milestone by submitting its bid in response to the Defence Ministry's tender for the construction of three new Kalvari class submarines for the Indian Navy. This development is crucial as it signals progress in the government's efforts to bolster naval capabilities through the acquisition of these advanced submarines.
According to senior defense sources, the Defence Ministry has received bids from the Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) for the large-scale project. The project involves the indigenous construction of submarines in Mumbai, undertaken in collaboration with the French firm Naval Group.
India has successfully commissioned five out of the six Kalvari class submarines, also recognized as the Scorpene class, as per the 2005 order from France. The anticipated induction of the sixth submarine is expected to take place next year. This marks a significant milestone in India's naval capabilities enhancement through the completion of its submarine procurement program.
The government granted approval for Project 75 Additional Submarines during a Defense Acquisition Council meeting held in July of this year. This decision was made in conjunction with the approval of 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets. The submarines have met the Navy's expectations, and there is a strong desire within the force for their prompt induction.
Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar has directed officials to expedite the procedural steps for initiating the construction of the submarines at an Indian shipyard, according to sources.
Mazagon Dockyards Limited (MDL) has previously built six Scorpene submarines, with five already in active service. Anticipated for commissioning in early 2024, the sixth submarine is part of the ongoing enhancement of India's naval capabilities. The most recent addition, INS Vagir, a stealth Scorpene class submarine, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in January of this year.
The Kalvari class submarines are distinguished as highly potent naval platforms, boasting advanced stealth features that enhance their operational effectiveness. These submarines are equipped with a sophisticated armament system, including long-range guided torpedoes and anti-ship missiles.
