McDonald's Malaysia has filed a lawsuit amounting to $1.3 million against BDS Malaysia, a pro-Palestinian group, over its advocacy for boycotting companies purportedly supporting Israel. In a statement released, the fast-food giant articulated that the civil suit is initiated to safeguard "our rights and interests in accordance with the law."
The legal action underscores McDonald's commitment to addressing concerns related to calls for boycotts and reflects the company's stance on protecting its legal rights amid geopolitical controversies.
McDonald's asserted its non-support and non-endorsement of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. In a statement, the fast-food chain emphasized that, while acknowledging and respecting the individual decision to boycott, such actions should be grounded in factual information rather than false allegations. McDonald's commitment to clarity and accuracy in addressing the matter aligns with its stance on ensuring that decisions related to boycotts are informed by accurate and truthful information.
McDonald's is seeking six million ringgit in damages for alleged defamation, as revealed in a legal document seen by AFP. In response, BDS Malaysia, part of the global Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement initiated by Palestinian civil society organizations in 2005, categorically denies the allegations in a social media post on X.
The campaign actively promotes political and economic measures aimed at expressing dissent against Israel's treatment of Palestinians. Through advocating for strategic actions, the campaign aligns with broader global efforts to address concerns related to the Palestinian cause, specifically highlighting the need for consequential political and economic responses to the ongoing situation.
In response to Israel's military campaign in Gaza following Hamas's attacks, BDS Malaysia has escalated calls for Malaysians to boycott Western brands, including McDonald's, KFC, and Zara. The advocacy alleges that these brands are complicit in Israeli atrocities against Palestinians.
Israel's offensive in Gaza resulted in approximately 1,140 casualties, predominantly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures. Hamas's attacks on Israel included the taking of about 250 hostages, with more than half still inside the war zone, and some are presumed dead.
Israel's ongoing military campaign has resulted in a reported death toll of at least 21,507 people, predominantly women and children, as indicated by the health ministry in Gaza, which is under the rule of Hamas.
