The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has introduced a landmark house-tax waiver, providing substantial relief to residents by eliminating tax dues for the financial year 2024-25 and clearing all previous pending taxes. This initiative aims to alleviate financial burdens on homeowners and curb corruption in tax collection.
MCD Mayor Mahesh Khichi, Deputy Mayor Ravinder Bhardwaj, Leader of the House Mukesh Goel, and senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh announced the scheme during a press conference on Monday. The proposal, designed to ease economic pressure on citizens, is expected to receive formal approval in the MCD House on Tuesday.
Under this scheme, properties up to 100 square yards, including residential shops, will be fully exempt from house tax beginning in the next financial year. Homes ranging between 100 and 500 square yards will receive a 50% waiver. Additionally, for the first time, 1,300 housing societies in Delhi, previously ineligible for exemptions, will now benefit from a 25% rebate.
Highlighting the importance of this initiative, Mayor Khichi emphasised that the AAP government remains committed to fulfilling its promises. He also noted that the MCD plans to regularise 12,000 contractual employees, building upon the 8,000 workers who have already been granted permanent positions in the past two years.
AAP’s MCD in-charge, Durgesh Pathak, underscored the scheme’s role in promoting transparency in tax collection and eliminating corruption. He criticised previous administrations for using house tax as a tool for bribery, resulting in significant revenue losses.
Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh described the initiative as historic, highlighting that 1,300 housing societies in Delhi would benefit from the 25% tax rebate for the first time. “This decision will bring much-needed relief to thousands of families who have been struggling with high tax burdens for years,” he stated.
The AAP-led civic body has also improved financial management, ensuring timely salary payments for MCD employees—an improvement over previous administrations where salary delays were frequent. This tax waiver marks another major achievement for the AAP government, reinforcing its commitment to public welfare and resolving long-standing issues faced by Delhi residents.
