Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has named her nephew, Akash Anand, as her successor and the national coordinator. This decision comes a month after she removed him from a key party position.
BSP chief Mayawati has named her nephew, Akash Anand, as her successor and national coordinator. BSP leader Lal Ji Medhankar confirmed the announcement to news agency ANI.
In May, Mayawati removed Akash Anand from the position of national coordinator and her designated political successor, stating the decision was in the "larger interest" of the party until he attained full maturity.
Mayawati, in a post on X, emphasised that the BSP is not only a party but also a movement for the self-respect and self-esteem of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and social change. She highlighted that both she and Kanshi Ram had dedicated their lives to this cause and were preparing a new generation to continue the momentum.
This announcement followed the party's poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, where the BSP failed to secure any seats. This marked a sharp decline from the 2019 polls, where the party had won 10 seats.
Earlier this month, BSP president Mayawati commented on the party's relationship with the Muslim community. She noted that despite providing "proper representation" to Muslims in the elections, the community had not fully supported the BSP.
Mayawati announced that the BSP would reconsider its strategy for future elections, particularly regarding the inclusion of Muslim candidates. She stressed the importance of giving the community electoral opportunities to prevent the party from suffering similar losses in the future.
In a statement, Mayawati said the party would conduct a "deep analysis" of its recent electoral defeat and take necessary measures to strengthen its position. She emphasised that the Muslim community, a significant part of the BSP, needed to better understand the party's intentions and representation efforts.
