A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck central Myanmar on Friday, March 28, 2025, causing widespread damage and casualties. The tremors were felt across Thailand, leading to emergency measures, including the issuance of an emergency helpline by the Indian Embassy in Bangkok. The Indian government has assured full support to the affected regions, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasising India’s readiness to assist.
Why and What Happened?
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake's epicentre was 16 km northwest of Sagaing city, Myanmar, at a depth of 10 km. The earthquake which occurred around 12:50 p.m. local time, was followed by an aftershock measuring 6.8 in magnitude. The devastating tremors led to the collapse of multiple buildings, resulting in significant casualties.
As per reports, 55 people lost their lives in Myanmar, while four fatalities were recorded in Thailand. The disaster has affected nearly 800,000 people, leaving many injured or missing. Skyscrapers in Myanmar swayed dangerously, and metro and rail services in Bangkok were suspended due to safety concerns. The Thai Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, held an urgent crisis meeting and declared a state of emergency in the capital.
Indian Embassy in Thailand Issues Emergency Helpline
In response to the earthquake, the Indian Embassy in Bangkok issued an emergency helpline number for Indian nationals residing or traveling in Thailand.
The official statement read, “In case of any emergency, Indian nationals in Thailand are advised to contact the emergency number +66 618819218.”
The Embassy assured that all its members in Bangkok and the Consulate in Chiang Mai are safe.
It further stated, “After powerful earthquake tremors recorded in Bangkok and in other parts of Thailand, the Embassy is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Thai authorities. So far, no untoward incident involving any Indian citizen has been reported.”
PM Modi Assures Assistance
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the earthquake’s impact in Myanmar and Thailand. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to providing assistance and directed the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to coordinate with the governments of both nations.
Taking to the social media platform X, Modi stated: “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand.”
Meanwhile, Secretary (East) at the MEA, Jaideep Mazumdar, confirmed that Indian authorities are actively analysing the extent of damage in Myanmar. He emphasised that India has always been a first responder in disaster situations and that updates regarding assistance would be provided soon.
Impact on BIMSTEC Summit
Despite the catastrophe, the upcoming 6th BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit in Thailand remains unaffected. PM Modi is scheduled to visit Thailand for the summit and an official engagement from April 3 to 4. This will be his third visit to the country.
Mazumdar highlighted the relevance of disaster management in the BIMSTEC region, stating: “The BIMSTEC region is prone to extreme weather events and natural disasters. Its relevance can be seen today in the devastating earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Collaboration in disaster management and between our disaster management authorities through HADR (Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief) exercises has been a priority area for India.”
Earthquake Tremors Felt in India
The effects of the Myanmar earthquake extended beyond Thailand, reaching parts of India. The National Centre for Seismology recorded a 4.0 magnitude earthquake in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills at 1:03 p.m. on Friday. Mild tremors were also reported in Kolkata and Imphal, though no major damage was recorded.
The devastating earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand has resulted in significant loss of life and infrastructure damage. With Thailand declaring a state of emergency and Myanmar facing severe destruction, international aid is crucial. The Indian government has assured immediate assistance and remains in close coordination with both nations. Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Thailand has set up emergency measures to ensure the safety of Indian citizens. The global community continues to monitor the situation, offering prayers and support to the affected regions.
