Maruti Suzuki India revealed plans to allocate Rs 450 crore over the next three years towards initiating renewable energy projects, including solar and biogas ventures.
Throughout the fiscal year 2023-24, the company directed Rs 120.8 crore towards this initiative. This investment is slated to escalate four-fold to Rs 450 crore over three years, commencing from the fiscal year 2024-25.
Hisashi Takeuchi, the Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki, articulated, “As we expand our production capacity from approximately 2 million to 4 million by 2030-31, we are concurrently accelerating our endeavours to augment the proportion of sustainable and renewable energy sources across our operations.”
In tandem with introducing various technologies into its products, the company intends to diversify its reliance on renewable energy sources to enhance environmental sustainability.
Maruti Suzuki has initiated a trial biogas plant at its Manesar facility during FY25, aiming to harness the untapped potential of in-house food waste. This initiative yields 0.2 tonnes of biogas daily, with an anticipated output of 1 lakh standard cubic meters of biogas in FY25. This output is projected to offset approximately 190 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Additionally, the company has bolstered its solar capacity to 43.2 megawatts (MW) during the fiscal year 2024. It is on course to augment this capacity by 15 MW at its Manesar plant and by 20 MW at the upcoming Kharkhoda plant over the next two years.
Maruti Suzuki's commitment to investing in renewable energy projects underscores its dedication to sustainable business practices and environmental stewardship.
By harnessing solar and biogas technologies and expanding their capacity, the company is poised to significantly reduce its carbon footprint while contributing to the global effort towards combating climate change.
This proactive approach aligns with Maruti Suzuki's vision of achieving a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.
