Amid the escalating tensions in Manipur, the National People's Party (NPP) has withdrawn its support from the Biren Singh-led government. On Monday, several state MLAs passed a resolution addressing urgent demands, including a call for the central government to reassess the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the state.
The resolution also demanded immediate action against Kuki militants, allegedly responsible for the killing of six individuals, including women and children, in Jiribam. It called for a mass operation against the militants to be initiated within seven days. Furthermore, the resolution sought the transfer of three key cases to the National Investigation Agency (NIA): the burning and killing of a woman, the murder of six innocent civilians, and the killing of a woman farmer.
The MLAs stated that the Kuki militants behind the violence should be declared an "unlawful organisation" within a week. The resolution warned, “If the above resolutions taken are not implemented within the specified period, all the NDA legislators will decide the future course of action in consultation with the people of the state.” The Chief Minister's Secretariat, which released the resolution, assured that both the central and state governments would take steps to restore normalcy in Manipur.
During the meeting, the MLAs also condemned attacks on them and the destruction of their properties. The resolution stated, “Such barbaric action of the miscreants, including the looting and destruction of properties, was strongly condemned by all the legislators present. Legal action will be initiated against the concerned miscreants, based on the findings of a High-Powered Committee.”
Meanwhile, NPP National Vice President Yumnam Joykumar voiced concerns over the state's deteriorating law and order situation, criticising the government for not acting on their suggestions. Speaking to ANI, he said, “We had given several suggestions to the Manipur government, but they were not acted upon. The government and party have not been able to control the law and order situation in the state. The state has been facing a serious law and order situation. We feel that the state government has failed in maintaining law and order and providing security to the people.”
Joykumar called for immediate measures to address the crisis. He added, “Confidence-building measures should be taken to bring peace. The state government should think of permanent houses for displaced people. We have also asked for a neutral government in Manipur.”
As the situation unfolds, the Manipur government has extended the suspension of internet and mobile data services in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Thoubal, and Churachandpur districts. This measure, aimed at maintaining public order, will continue until 5:15 pm on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
