Manipur has once again set the news headlines as over 50 students sustained injuries in a recent clash with the police force as the latter tried to restrict their way to Raj Bhavan on Tuesday. Following the unlawful conduct, the government has imposed a 5-day ban on internet services in the Imphal Valley region. The state is also made to bear the curfew as a result of the escalated law and order in the Imphal East, Imphal West and Thoubal districts.
In a directive, the home department described the situation and stated, “to thwart the design and activities of anti-national and anti-social elements, maintain peace and communal harmony and prevent any loss of life or danger to public/private property.”
Students in Manipur hit the streets demanding the termination of the state’s security advisor and director general of police following their failure to protect the lives and properties of the citizens. The protests took an adverse turn when protesters started pelting stones outside the Raj Bhavan on Monday. Subsequently, on Tuesday, carrying forward the protests, the students tried to march to the Raj Bhavan. However, their way was blocked as the security personnel intervened and restricted them halfway.
One of the students - a girl - was rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal after she sustained severe injuries. According to an official, the girl is undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Assessing the lawbreaking breach in the state, the centre has sent out 2000 more CRPF troops to tackle the situation and bring peace back to the state. One of the top security officers in a statement told PTI, "The CRPF will have a lead role in Manipur. Fresh units of the force were rushed to the state since the violence broke out between Meitei and Kuki people last year in May and the force is now being strengthened so that decision-making is better,".
On Tuesday, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya held a meeting with student representatives and women groups at around 6 pm and appealed for peace.
