On Wednesday, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya strongly criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over a recent notification by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Department (KMCD) regarding changes to the holiday schedule. He called her government "Mamata Banerjee's Islamic caliphate of West Bengal."
The corporation said that the issue is being taken seriously, and action is being taken against the official responsible for the mistake. The withdrawn notice had initially declared two holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr while removing the holiday for Vishwakarma Puja.
Amit Malviya posted Kolkata MCD’s notification on X and captioned it as "Welcome to Mamata Banerjee's Islamic Caliphate of West Bengal." He accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of engaging in religious appeasement and alleged that Kolkata’s Mayor, Firhad Hakim, was responsible for removing the Hindu holiday.
Malviya further connected the holiday adjustment to political motives, claiming it exposed Banerjee’s "anti-OBC mindset" and was part of a strategy to consolidate Muslim votes amid changing political dynamics.
Malviya contended that the decision not only deprived Hindus of their cultural observances but also imposed an extra holiday on Muslim daily wage earners instead of addressing their actual needs for "education and employment."
He also accused Mamata Banerjee of previously modifying the OBC sub-quota to include Muslims. The Calcutta High Court overturned this move and is now under review by the Supreme Court. Malviya assured that the BJP would seek justice through constitutional means.
"BJP will ensure justice as per constitutional provisions," he stated. The BJP leader further said in his statement, "Banerjee’s Muslim appeasement is destroying West Bengal’s social fabric. If she continues in office, in a few years, it will be difficult to recognise whether our Bengal is still the land of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Netaji and Syama Prasad Mookerjee."
