Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal and leader of the Trinamool Congress, is "extremely upset" about the leak of footage showing a public argument between her party's MPs. According to Trinamool insiders, she has urged all party MPs to cool down and avoid doing any interviews, according to a report by India Today.
The Trinamool Congress faced embarrassment after the BJP shared a video and leaked screenshots showing a heated argument between some well-known leaders of Mamata Banerjee’s party. "No MP should fan this crisis any further," the Trinamool chief told her party members on Tuesday. BJP’s IT cell head, Amit Malviya, shared videos and WhatsApp chats on X, claiming that senior Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee and another unidentified party MP had a heated argument. According to him, this happened on April 4 at the Election Commission of India headquarters, where the Trinamool delegation had gone to submit a complaint.
Amit Malviya shared a video that reportedly shows Kalyan Banerjee angrily confronting another lawmaker, who, according to Saugata Roy, was Mahua Moitra, while Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien tried to calm things down. Kalyan Banerjee can be heard purportedly saying, "They are so unruly," and, "Saying will get me arrested..." O’Brien’s tries to handle the spat saying, "We are in a public space brother, I’m pleading with you." Saugata Roy and Kalyan Banerjee each held their own press conferences to address the controversy, while Mamata instructed MPs to avoid giving interviews. Saugata Roy confirmed that Mahua Moitra was the other person involved in the dispute. He criticized Kalyan Banerjee's "intemperate behavior," calling it unacceptable. "I saw Mahua was crying in Parliament... She was going to complain about Kalyan’s behaviour," he said, mentioning that he was not present when the argument took place.
Kalyan Banerjee, the other party leader involved in the argument, didn’t mention Mahua by name but said she was upset because her signature was missing from the memorandum that was going to be given to the Election Commission. "She was shouting at the top of her voice and I responded accordingly. In the meanwhile she ran to the BSF and asked them to arrest me!," he said while narrating the incident.
