Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Mahathir announced that Malaysia is part of a core group working on a draft resolution proposing the expulsion of Israel from the United Nations General Assembly, citing Israel's human rights violations and alleged genocidal actions. Anwar informed the Malaysian parliament on Monday that the draft is currently under negotiation and is anticipated to be submitted to the UNGA for approval "in the near future."
“Strong measures, including Israel's removal from the United Nations following Israel's human rights violations and genocidal crimes, must be enforced as soon as possible,” he noted.
“Malaysia will ensure that the agenda is heard and given attention so that the atrocities of the Israeli regime can be stopped, besides allowing critical aid to reach the Palestinian people at a time when the massacre continues to worsen,” Anwar said.
Once the resolution is approved, Anwar stated, it is expected to serve as a legal foundation for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to continue delivering essential services, such as education, healthcare, and humanitarian aid. Last week, the Israeli Knesset passed legislation banning UNRWA's operations, which will impact its work in the Gaza Strip, the occupied West Bank, and East al-Quds. This law is set to take effect in 90 days.
Israel claims that members of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas have infiltrated UNRWA. However, the UN agency has denied these allegations and maintains that it implements measures to ensure its neutrality. On Monday, UNRWA warned that Israel's ban on its operations would result in the “collapse” of humanitarian efforts in the war-torn Gaza Strip.
“If this law is implemented, it would be likely to cause the collapse of the international humanitarian operation in the Gaza Strip – an operation of which UNRWA is the backbone,” Jonathan Fowler, UNRWA spokesman, told the AFP news agency.
The UN agency has been delivering education, healthcare, and other essential services to Palestinian refugees since the Arab-Israeli War of 1948 and the establishment of the Israeli regime. Currently, the number of Palestinian refugees is nearly six million, with refugee families comprising the majority of Gaza’s 2.3 million population.
Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, has called for the suspension of Israel’s UN membership, citing its repeated violations of international law and the ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories.
